The first edition of the Encyclopaedia was published in English, French and German between 19, followed by a Supplement in 1938. Yet, the growing demand for concise and factual information about the history and culture of Islam justifies an endeavour to try to compile a reference book based on the Encyclopaedia of Islam. Such a work is supposed to contain the essentials of the Encyclopaedia, but the definition of what the essentials are is a ready subject of discussion, and brevity easily comes in conflict with them. The aim of the present work is to present the reader with a condensation of the subject-matter of the Encyclopaedia of Islam in brief, orderly, and intelligible form. The Editors of the Encyclopaedia of Islam remember with respect and gratitude the unremitting support, in every possible form, which they enjoyed from him during his directorship, which unfortunately lasted only four years. He saw the first draft, but his untimely death on 5 December 1993 prevented him from seeing the final result. Brill who, early in 1992, suggested the compilation of the present work.
